The study is quiet enough tonight to hear the clock in the hall. The fire in the hearth has warmed the room well enough. The lamp gives the desk more light than I need.
The journal waited where I had left it. Most of its pages are unremarkable.
A few pages are not.
Earlier, while in town, one chair had gone unused long enough to become noticeable.
It needs a page here.

There are people whose absence arrives all at once. Others leave more slowly.
A life well lived has a way of remaining in ordinary places.
A habit remembered.
A phrase easy to recall.
A way of greeting the morning you find yourself repeating before you realize someone had taught it to you.
✧
The castle has shown me that every room carries traces of who I was when I made it.
A doorway hung square because I had patience that day.
A beam overhead still carries weight because I was strong that season.
Most of the work that supports us was finished before we knew we would someday need it.
People can be like that too.
They leave more than memories.
Their presence leaves behind ways of being.
✧
There is a temptation, after someone has gone, to count only what can no longer be shared.
Tonight I’ve been counting something else.
Their chair may be empty today.
But the grace they practiced made grace familiar.
The kindness they gave brightened rooms and asked for nothing in return.
The ordinary mornings their smile quietly turned into home.
Those things are still available, because someone took the trouble to place them into another life before needing to leave their own.
✧
The lamp has burned lower.
Outside the study windows the grounds have gone almost completely dark.
This page has made the journal better.
Tomorrow there will still be walls to build. Trees to tend. Coffee to prepare.
I’ll bank the fire before turning in.
Morning comes whether we are ready for it or not.
