The entry hall is different after the doors are closed.
During the day, the castle has its own kind of movement.
Footsteps across old floors. Voices carrying farther than people expect. Doors opening. Doors closing. People finding rooms they did not know existed.
Then evening comes.
The last visitor leaves. The door settles back into place. The latch finds its home.
And the castle remembers itself.

I have always enjoyed these hours.
I rarely turn many lights on. A lamp near the staircase. A small light by the corridor. Maybe the glow from another room farther away.
That is enough.
You learn a lot about a place when it is quiet.
You learn a lot about yourself too.
For a long time, I misunderstood what it meant to hold a key.
I thought life was mostly about deciding what to do when someone entered your rooms and damaged something.

Some people take the other eye.
There were moments I understood them.
More than I would like to admit.
There were seasons when revenge felt reasonable. When I imagined the perfect words. The perfect moment. The perfect consequence that would finally make someone understand what they had broken.
But revenge is a strange room.
You enter it hoping someone else will suffer.
Then one day you look around and realize you are the only one who has been living there.
So I tried another room.

Some turn the other cheek.
And there is something beautiful about that.
Grace repairs things anger never could. Patience saves things pride would have destroyed. Forgiveness can rebuild walls everyone assumed had fallen forever.
I believe that.
I have seen it.
But I have also learned something uncomfortable about myself.
My grace has limits.
For years, I wanted to believe it didnโt. I wanted to believe there was always another chance to give. Another explanation to consider.
And sometimes that was true.
Sometimes people stumble.
Sometimes people deserve the door opened again.
โง
But sometimes you eventually notice you are spending all your quiet hours repairing rooms someone else keeps damaging.
That realization was not anger.
It was honesty.
Some take the other eye.
Some turn the other cheek.
I have learned I often do something else.
I leave the room.
Not easily. Not without wondering if I should stay longer.
But quietly and finally.
I gather the things worth keeping, walk out, and close the door behind me.
โง
For a while, I thought that was a weakness.
Now I understand it is simply how I was built.
A castle cannot control everyone who approaches.
The invited will come. The curious will come. Even those who never intended to stay will sometimes wander through.
That is life.
An open door is part of having something worth entering.
But a key is different.
A key means access when no one else is watching.
A key means trust.
A key means someone can enter the quiet places.
And those are not meant for everyone.
โง
Tonight, the castle is still.
Most of the lights are off. The rooms are quiet. The doors are closed.
I still keep one lamp lit near the staircase. Not for anyone expected.
Just in case.
The rest of the keys hang by the door, where anyone might reach them.
Mine stays in my pocket.
