C03: The Right of Permission

The deed was older than the cathedral.

Tommaso had suspected this. Reading confirmed it.

The ink had faded unevenly, the way documents do when they have been handled often but never intentionaly. The parchment was sound. The seal intact. It had been preserved with care — the kind of care given to things considered settled.

Tomasso was intentional. He read it once. Then again, slower.

The grant was conditional. That was not unusual. Sacred work was rarely unconditional. The language framed necessity with the caution of someone who understood that urgency did not dissolve responsibility.

The land was to be used for the work, for the duration of the need, under the authority then recognized.

Tommaso traced the verbs with one finger.

The right conferred was permission.

Not transfer. Not donation.

The Latin resisted simplification. It allowed use. It assumed return.

He turned the page.

There was no return clause.

He searched past the signatures. Past the witnesses. Past the seal pressed into wax with deliberate, unhurried force. He checked the margins for later annotations. There were references — citations carried forward into newer documents, each one assuming the authority of the one before it.

The permission had never been closed.

Tommaso set the document down and folded his hands. Afternoon light moved weakly through the high window, illuminating dust that had no interest in the page below it.

Permission to use the land had been given.

The work had proceeded.

The structure had lasted. Allowed to become the landscape of Navarra.

Restitution had never been addressed.

He reached for his pencil and marked the margin. A single line beside the clause. Small. Deliberate.

Clarify whether restitution provisions were ever formally enacted.

He did not underline it.

Outside, the bell rang once and fell silent.

Tommaso closed the file, retied the twine, and placed it in the follow-up tray. He turned off the desk lamp.

He did not feel alarm.

Only unease. A condition designed to close — and never did.

Above the valley, the cathedral stood against the darkening sky.

It had been standing there when the question was written.

It would be standing there when the answer arrived.
